TWENTY IN 20 (working title)
SHORT DOCUMENTARY FILM
What is twenty in 20?
This short documentary will explore what it’s like to be in your 20s at this point in history from a perspective of the world of work. Anonymous phone conversations from 20-somethings will be juxtaposed with data on the economy and job market now compared with other points in recent history.
The pandemic plays a huge part in young people’s current situations, but it’s not the only thing that they have on their minds. So far contributors have talked about mental health, unemployment, “hustle” culture, affordable childcare options for working mums, and more.
Interviews are being carried out by phone; not only is this a stylistic choice to highlight the feelings of intimacy and isolation in the conversations, but most contributors feel more comfortable remaining anonymous in the final film and phone calls allow them to do this.
WHAT IM LOOKING FOR AT THE MOMENT
I want to speak to a varied range of people, and right now I am particularly lacking in geographical diversity. So I am currently looking for some more contributors who I can interview over the phone (you can be anonymous in the final film) to make sure there’s a diverse range of voices from around the UK. In particular:
Interviewee(s) in Scotland
Interviewee(s) in Wales
Interviewee(s) who identify as coming from a working class/poor socio-economic background
All interviewees should be in their 20s (if you’re 19 or 30 there might be some wiggle room!), currently living in the UK, and happy to chat over the phone about your current work situation (I appreciate this can be a sensitive subject - so you can remain anonymous in the final film).
If that sounds like you please send me an email!

WHO AM I?
Hello! I’m Emily, I’m the filmmaker who is directing and producing the documentary. So far the project has been a one-woman job. I have run my video production company for the last several years. My main work involves making impact and fundraising films for non-profit clients, helping them to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds with the stories I source and tell through video. I have also helped to film and produce factual & documentary television programmes for Channel 4 and Channel 5.
FAQs
What stage of production are you in?
In the current stage I am conducting interviews and carrying out some of the research with facts on current economy and job market that’ll be used to frame the interviews.
Who is funding this?
Until now, I have self-funded the project. I am looking into grants & film funds that could help to finance the next phases of the project to finish production and take it through post-production (please feel free to send any you know of my way if you think I should apply!). However, the concept of the film was developed so that I would be able to finish it alone if required; I am a strong shooter and have plenty of editing experience.
Where will the final film be distributed?
As an independent film, I don’t know yet where the film will be shared. I have plans to approach media outlets such as the Guardian after interviews and research after the current phase has been completed. If it is not picked up by any media outlets, the film will then be submitted to festivals.
